Rice is a great source of carbohydrates and it interestingly blends with vegetables and/or meat. Cooking rice can be a bit tricky sometimes especially if you haven’t had much practice. You might have tried it yourself and got dry, undercooked, overcooked, or even sticky rice instead of the desired results. All you need to know is the right technique to get rid of rice cooking woes. You’ll need the following when learning how to cook rice. Of course, you’ll need rice to cook. You’ll also need water, cups, a rice cooker or saucepan with lid or pot. You’ll also need a wooden spoon and a fork.
How to Cook Rice
The steps on how to cook rice are moderately easy for the average home maker. Your first step is to fill your saucepan with 1 3/4 cups of water for every cup of rice you intend to cook. You then bring all that water to a boil and then add a teaspoon of salt.
Once you have your water boiling then it’s time to pour your rice. Using your wooden spoon, stir you’re just so to separate the grains. You don’t want to have clumps on them and you certainly don’t want to stir them too much, which would eventually make them really sticky.
You then cover the pot and let it all simmer. Put down the heat to the lowest setting when simmering. Simmer the whole thing for just 18 minutes and then remove your saucepan from the heat.
Now we’re at the finishing touches on how to cook rice. Remove the lid off the saucepan and allow the rice to steam off for about five minutes. After that, fluff your rice to separate the grains using a fork. Once the grains are separated and your rice is fluffed nicely you can now serve it on the table.
Making Fried Rice
You might want to make fried rice after learning how to cook rice. You’ll need a large skillet, oil, soy sauce, eggs, ginger, garlic, your rice, and onions. Coat your skillet with oil and put it over high heat. Add ginger, garlic, and onions and sauté for about a minute. Reduce heat down to medium and add any grain or vegetables you might fancy like peas and carrots and stir.
Now you can add your rice and stir the whole thing for five minutes. Make a well in the center of your fried rice and crack and pour your eggs in it. Cook the eggs for one minute and then stir in everything. Add a little soy sauce and season with salt and pepper. Now it’s time to give it a good toss for a couple of minutes and then serve it.
